
Pluto’s new moon is to be named Vulcan in honour of Star Trek’s Mr Spock after the show’s fans heeded a call by one of its iconic stars.
The name was originally suggested by William Shatner, who played Captain James T Kirk of the Starship Enterprise, in the original series of the show.
Vulcan is the home planet of Spock, the Enterprise’s icily logical science officer.
More than 450,000 people voted for the name in the online poll organised by the Seti Institute to name the two recently discovered moons of Pluto.
California-based Seti searches for intelligent life in the universe and Vulcan topped its poll with nearly 200,000 votes.
